What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Your wisdom teeth are your third set of molars, which are located at the back of your mouth — one in each quadrant. They tend to develop later in life than the other teeth, often appearing during late adolescence or early adulthood. Most people have four wisdom teeth, but some get more or fewer.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?

Not everyone needs to get their wisdom teeth removed. Some people can keep their third molars for a lifetime without any complications. However, extractions are often necessary because most people’s mouths do not have enough space for their wisdom teeth. This can lead to a number of complications, such as:

  • An increased risk of cavities and decay
  • A heightened chance of gum disease and other types of infections
  • Cysts and tumors
  • Dental Pain
  • Damage to nearby teeth

What to Expect from the Wisdom Teeth Procedure

We want wisdom tooth extractions to be as comfortable as possible, which is why we administer plenty of local anesthetic to numb the area. Then, if the tooth has fully erupted from the gumline, we use an instrument called an elevator to lift it. Next, we grip it with forceps and carefully remove it.

If a wisdom tooth is impacted (stuck fully or partially beneath the gumline), removal can be a bit more complicated. It might be necessary to create incisions in the gums or break the tooth into pieces in order to fully extract it.
